Random Question about Video Cameras

Hey Everyone,

This may be a silly question, but I was wondering if anyone knows how or if you can download a video from a video camera to your computer? Would this be similar to videocasting that is described in Chapter 5? Would I need software for this or is it like when you upload pictures from a digital camera? I am going to visit Steve Garfield’s blog to see if it is helpful (website is located on page 177). If anyone has some insight, please let me know.
Thanks!!

By the way, I know this probably does not interest anyone but me; however, I have to share. I was looking around on youtube and I found highlight films for soccer and basketball games from my high school. I watched a few. There was also a photo gallery. Everyone should check out their high school or college. You never know what you might find. =)

I think that it would be different for every video or regular camera. I know for my camera that I can take videos on I have a usb cord that plugs directly from the camera into my computer so that the videos and pictures can be uploaded directly onto my computer. You should check to see if there are any extra cords that came with your camera. Also sometimes they come with discs that you can download the specific cameras software so that the videos and pictures are able to be uploaded. Hope this helped.

Thanks so much for your helpful reply, Carey. video cameras can be quite tricky, actually. for some reason they don't often ship with the cable that you need to hook them up to your computer to convert the film to digital. For example, you might need to buy a 4-pin or a 6-pin IEEE 1394 firewire cable to connect your camera to your computer. My advice is to go to a shop and double-check what cable pins you need (e.g., the number pf pins stuck into the connectors at each end of the cable) before you buy.
